3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to processes used to synthesize a
three-dimensional object in which successive layers of material are formed under computer
control to create an object. Objects are produced using digital model data from a 3D model. It is
claimed that 3D printing signals the beginning of a third industrial revolution, succeeding the
production line assembly that dominated manufacturing starting in the late 19th century.
Applications of 3D printing include rapid prototyping, architectural scale models & maquettes,
healthcare (3D printed prosthetics and 3D printing with human tissue) and entertainment. The
worldwide 3D printing industry is expected to grow from $3.07B in revenue in 2013 to $12.8B by
2018, and exceed $21B in worldwide revenue by 2020. As it evolves, 3D printing technology is
destined to transform almost every major industry and change the way we live, work, and play in
the future. During the program, students will learn what 3D printing is, how 3D printing work and
how to 3D Print, systematically experiencing the cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
